Description: That Saturday night sketch session at the nude-model club consisted of 15-minute poses. The model appeared tall and slender, her figure resembling the Marco-colored pencil I often use. After a few minutes of introductions and setting up the pose, the group leader walked around her and said, “Let’s get started!” We began to draw.

Instantly, the room fell into an eerie silence. Soft music drifted from an old, dark bookshelf speaker in the corner. A floating piano melody seemed insufficient to fill the small voids of space. As everyone hurriedly sketched with their pencils grazing the paper, I felt a wave of heat sweep across the entire room.

The stifling stillness made my blood vessels tighten; my body felt frozen. I looked up at the model, and in that moment, I saw a flame. Suddenly, the door flew open—a giant eye peered into the room. A pale yellow light flooded the floor, leaving only me silhouetted. I was reminded of old dreams. A crimson desire, as vivid as the girl’s lips standing before me.

Collection 2: Traditional Vietnamese lacquer-carved paintings (2025)

Description:

Inspired by Vietnamese folk poetry.

Vietnamese proverbs and folk verses reflect a simplicity in language, a subtlety in meaning, and a uniquely witty spirit. They stem from a deep, experiential observation of nature and everyday life—insights that may take a lifetime to truly perceive. Using the traditional Vietnamese technique of woodcut painting, I reimagine these folk images through a personal lens. This is my way of preserving a distinctly Vietnamese form of linguistic culture. To me, each painting is like a small brick—one that I hope will help build a wall for the imagination to lean on.

All pieces are 30x40cm and are single-edition originals.

Price:320usd/piece (shipping fee does not include)

Born in 1976 in Hanoi, Phạm Duy Ly graduated from the University of Architecture in 1999. Artist Duy Ly always emphasizes discipline and consistent practice in his creative process. For him, each brushstroke is not merely an outburst of sudden inspiration but also the result of continuous refinement.

Currently, he focuses on working with oil paint, a medium he regards as an irresistibly challenging pursuit. Mastering oil painting techniques, to him, is a long-term journey that compels him to continually explore and experiment in order to fully harness the medium’s potential.

Duy Ly’s paintings serve as gateways, guiding viewers into the dreamlike realm of imagination. For him, painting becomes a refuge for thoughts that have never been voiced—a place where he can liberate himself from the constraints of language.
